International Medical Exchange Program

The Center for Global Health integrates global health education programming and faculty research initiatives within Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and encourages medical students at Feinberg to engage in global health in a meaningful way via research projects, supervised clinical rotations, and public health projects. Our students are able to visit both affiliated and unaffiliated locations and are eligible to apply for stipends to support their travel, as well as elective and research credit.

Applicants should apply to the Physician-Scientist Training Program (PSTP, 2247140C1) of the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University through Electronic Residency Application Service. Applicants may also apply to the Categorical Internal Medicine track (2247140C0) if they would like to be considered for the traditional three-year residency program.In addition to their application through ERAS, applicants should submit the online PSTP application. If not already included in ERAS, applicants should also submit a letter of recommendation from their principal research mentor. Additional letters to support an applicant and their research potential may also be submitted if desired. The application deadline is Oct. 1.

Application process:

1. To be considered for an ACGME-accredited slot, please complete the supplemental application.
2. All potential international candidates must be first vetted and approved by the associate vice chair for education, the fellowship program director, and the office of graduate medical education before an offer is considered.
3. All candidates for this program must be eligible for American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certification.
4. Candidates must also hold a permanent medical license in the state of Illinois.
5. Once approved by the GMEC as an exceptional candidate, the applicant is invited for interview and will be ranked using the standard NRMP ranking system.

Fellows are expected to provide salary support through their home institutions and may qualify for J-1 visa sponsorship through Northwestern.

2. Candidates must be eligible for a temporary medical license in the state of Illinois.
3. Candidates must provide proof of salary support during their time in the US

Faculty may be considered for positions of up to 2 years while studying in a Northwestern program.  Faculty are expected to provide salary support through their home institutions and may qualify for J-1 visa sponsorship through Northwestern.
