Program Director's Message
Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Northwestern University. I’m proud to call this place my academic home – I’ve been at Northwestern since 2008 and became program director in 2024.
Our residency motto, "Nice, Hard-Working, and Smart,” encapsulates the qualities our residents bring to the program. This is a place where residents from all backgrounds can belong, be connected to our community, and take their already-remarkable accomplishments and become future leaders in academic medicine.
We provide residents with outstanding clinical training, a comprehensive educational program, research opportunities, and longitudinal guidance and career planning. During rotations at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the Chicago Jesse Brown VA, and many outpatient clinics both at academic centers and within the community, residents encounter and manage a broad spectrum of conditions and pathologies. Residents teach medical students, lead conferences, and contribute to a rich culture of education. Our team of APDs and Core Faculty have dedicated time for teaching and mentorship throughout your time in residency. Beyond the residency, we are housed in a world-class health system and University that are international exemplars in patient care, research, and community engagement.
Our curriculum is strong due to resident involvement and input. Residents have a direct impact on the program’s mission and efforts through participating in key committees: Curriculum, Wellness, Health Equity/Advocacy, and Quality Improvement/Patient Safety. We offer an environment that fosters professional and intellectual development and provides an excellent clinical and didactic education through simulation-based mastery learning, dedicated academic half days, and ample preparation for the ABIM board exam. Our recent graduates have excelled in careers in General Internal Medicine, Hospital Medicine, and Fellowship programs around the country. Our graduates become leaders and meaningful contributors in the next phase of their careers, thanks in part to the experiences and skills they gained in our program. Their outstanding performance in rigorous fellowships is a testament to the balanced clinical experiences and academic strength of our program.
It’s a privilege to work with colleagues and friends who are dedicated to education at a wonderful institution. I believe that you will find Northwestern to be a supportive home as I have. We look forward to reading your application and getting to know you!
